Amazon Day 2 photographs

Daybreak . This is the sight that greeted us  every morning . Too bad I can't capture the sounds of the forest in this photo. 

Breakfast.  A cornucopia of fruits from the Amazon,  along with half a dozen other dishes 




Navigating the channels in a small boat. A feeling of total immersion in the forest

A difficult hike through the forest where Gabriel our guide used a machete to create a path for us. 



Along the way we he gave is a wealth of information about plants and their uses, like this " telephone" tree which is used for communication if someone is lost (if you tap the trunk really hard with an it makes a loud echoing sound that can be heard 2 km away)


Gliding through the forest in thearly small boat. In the dry season this is all just a river bed


Students opt to swim after theach hike 


Our second attempt at piranha fishing is much more successful! 


Squirrel monkeys in the trees


Some decided to pay us a visit 


We went searching for caimans at night 


Little did we know that Gabriel was going to reach into the water and pull one out !


A small juvenile of course , otherwise Gabriel would be missing some fingers . He put the little guy back in the water later.

Today in Salvador they celebrated Saint Benedito Day and there was a precession of people from the Our Lady of Rosary of Black Men and Black Women Church throughout the square of Old Salvador. Salvador was the first capital of Brazil for 200 years.  First place we stopped was the famous lighthouse. This was built in the 16th century and has a  breathtaking view of  Baía de Todos os Santos. Baía is Portuguese for bay.  Next we stopped at the market. Connie explained to us that 10,000 people work at the market. Fruit, vegetables, pottery, and a lot of African candomblé items of all types are sold throughout the entire market.  From here we headed to Old Salvador where we had a cooking demonstration on the native Salvador dish called Moqueca.                      2nd in  Day in Search of Amzaonius Species Camen in River Amazon    Squirrel Monkey; In Amazon Forest                As every single day, with the beautiful morning sunrise, I also wake up along with the sun. By the time we wake up, the trees in the Amazon rainforest were slowly dancing due to the wind blow. The birds were singing with their melodious voices. After viewing some romantic parts of nature, the gang had a morning breakfast. The ship was slowly heading from one bank of the Amazon River to another Bank.   On the way, there were some mini motels, and parks as well. Perhaps those are for tourism purposes and other small houses belonging to the indigenous people of that community. The capoeira studio where we had our lesson Students first had to learn to play the instruments that accompany capoeira Listen to the sounds of the instruments The mural at the back represents all the orixas of the Candomble religion, about which we will be leaning more tomorrow  In the afternoon we had a percussion lesson from an all-female percussion group created to empower women  The richest church in Brazil.  Built in the 1700s, the interior is covered in gold-leaf
